6000 Europeans, from ten countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Turkey and the UK), were asked about their perception of electric cars for the survey published in December 2011 by the Cetelem Car Observatory.

A team of German and US researchers have just published in the “Sleep” journal an article on the effects on sleep of mono- and multi-exposures to road, rail and air noises. This study could question the "bonus" granted to rail traffic and require to deepen the research on the effects related to multi-exposure to several noise sources.

Within the SURVOL project, Bruitparif continues the deployment of expert measurement stations in order to monitor aircraft noise. Some Sonopodes were installed in Bonnelles (Yvelines), Limours (Essonne), Marolles-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) and Lésigny (Seine-et-Marne) in July, in Sèvres (Hauts-de-Seine) in August, then in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt (Val-d'Oise) in September. Measurement stations have also been installed in the Serment de Koufra square (Paris) and in Villeneuve-le-Roi (Val-de-Marne).

The results of these measurements are now available in real time on the Rumeur website.

Road, rail and air traffic: there are many noise sources, especially in highly urbanised areas such as Ile-de-France. The population is subjected permanently to noise and, due to the extent of the urban fabric, it is difficult to avoid it. Beyond hearing effects, many studies have shown that environmental noise exposures are related to non-auditory effects such as sleep disturbance, annoyance and cardiovascular diseases.

The High Council for Broadcasting (CSA) published in the Official Journal of October 11th, 2011 a decision related to the technical characteristics of the noise level of TV programmes and adverts. Indeed, the excessive sound level of adverts is the most recurring complaint received by the CSA, with an average of 3 complaints a week.

The University of Extremadura has just published a study about the impact of noise on birds. The barrier of 50 decibels seems to limit the presence of birds in an urban context. Half the species are strongly affected by noise.

Since October 2nd, 2011, the city of Paris has been testing the self-service car rental system Autolib’ (same principle as Velib’ for bicycles) before its official launch on December 1st. This service will be present in the capital and about 50 neighbouring towns, with 250 vehicles for as many stations for a start, and 3000 cars for nearly 6600 charging points in the long term. The vehicles could be rent on site or booked in advance by phone or on the Internet.
