Noise makes birds fly away

Noise makes birds fly away
Study - 19/10/2011
The University of Extremadura has just published a study about the impact of noise on birds. The barrier of 50 decibels seems to limit the presence of birds in an urban context. Half the species are strongly affected by noise.
The problem is not related to the hearing of these birds, but to their communication system. Indeed, their singing is in the same frequency bands as road traffic, which hinders their interactions. Some solutions could help these birds come back to parks: speed limitation on neighbouring roads, installation of noise barriers around parks… This would contribute to improving the urban landscape and developing green tourism.

The researchers studied 91 species in 27 Spanish and Portuguese urban parks (Cáceres, Badajoz, Almendralejo, Madrid, Seville, Evora, ...). Other factors were also observed, such as the type of vegetation, the surface area of the park or the presence of water.
