Distripolis: sustainable urban logistics

Distripolis: sustainable urban logistics
Live news - 28/06/2011
Geodis, the freight and logistics subsidiary of SNCF, is launching Distripolis, new urban logistics in line with the Grenelle of the Environment. The objective is to reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution, as well as noise nuisances related to urban goods transport.
Usually, goods are shipped in bulk to warehouses, then delivered with lorries or light commercial vehicles throughout the city. Distripolis adds a third step to this system, the BLUE bases (Ecological Urban Logistics Bases). There will be 8 of them in Paris by 2015. These bases will help better organise flows (the distance covered by the delivery vehicles has already been reduced by 5%) and use clean vehicles suitable for “last mile” delivery: electric light commercial vehicles, power-assisted delivery tricycles and silent electric pallet trucks.

Geodis plans on developing in the next 5 years this multimodal network in the main French cities and European capitals.
