1st green transatlantic flight

1st green transatlantic flight
Live news - 06/04/2010
On Tuesday, April 6th, for the sustainable development week, Air France operated the first green transatlantic flight.
This 9-hour-and-a-half-long flight from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Miami was operated by a Boeing 747-400ER, with 436 passengers and 18 crew members on board.

During this flight, all the procedures were optimised to reduce noise and gas emissions:
- shorter taxiing times,
- continuous climb,
- during the cruise phase, constant selection of the optimum altitude and speed to cut fuel consumption: The lighter the aircraft, the higher its optimum altitude. However, as the flight continues, the aircraft becomes lighter due to fuel consumption and the optimum altitude increases,
- continuous descent.

The coordinated application of these procedures cut CO2 emissions by 6-9 metric tons and saved 2-3 metric tons of fuel. During the departure and arrival phases, the procedures used also helped minimise noise levels by up to 7 decibels.
